Our Field with White Row Covers and Red Sand Bags

It’s been chilly many nights in the past couple weeks. We have put out long rows of white covers to protect our leafy greens like tatsoi, bok choi, lettuce, arugula, and mustards. We have been harvesting and donating a nice box or two of mixed greens the past couple weeks.

What a beautiful day we had in Patterson's field t What a beautiful day we had in Patterson's field today! After donating our 156 pound harvest of kale, collards, broccoli, cabbages, Swiss chard, escarole, peas, radishes, daikon, and lettuce to @opentablema, we spent a few more hours on planting/transplanting, mulching, broadforking, and just observing the lovely insect critters hanging out on our cover crops and companion plants!

We had such an exciting day today in Patterson’s We had such an exciting day today in Patterson’s field. We kicked off our harvest season last week with a modest (3.5 lb) donation of radishes and lettuce to @opentablema in Maynard. This week we made our first BIG harvest donation of the season: eight packed crates of lettuce and gorgeous greens plus several more bags of radishes, rhubarb, and more greens. Then, just as we arrived to meet the delivery volunteer in the parking lot, there was a fascinating otherworldly pollen storm (scroll left to see video). After the harvest, we spent several more hours on field prep and mowing our cover crops.

Yesterday we finished up our winter season schedul Yesterday we finished up our winter season schedule at Patterson’s field in Wayland and had a fun day sharpening all our tools and sorting through seed starting supplies.

We’ve also had several other sessions in January and February (swipe to see photos) where we primarily made progress on eradicating the invasive bittersweet and multiflora rose around the perimeter of the field.

Our Spring sessions start next week! In Wayland, our primary workday with @hannah_traggis will be on Tuesday so that we can optimize our harvest delivery schedule to meet the needs of the kitchen @opentablema. If you’d like to sign up for volunteering, please follow the link in our bio!
